[Stoves] Systematic cheating in car emissions and fuel efficiency tests

Dear Josh

If you have the raw data and know the method used, you can make a
recalculation and get (for that test) a correction factor by comparing the
initial and adjusted figure.

The problem for complex tests is when there are errors of concept or
calculation that treat different types of cars with different levels of
'skewing'.

For example if the cheat is to use bald tires, it will affect heavier cars
slightly more than light cars so although there exists a correction factor
for both, they are not the same.

If you make a conceptual error in how the test should be conducted, meaning
the desired evaluation will be 'unfair' that concept will affect different
stoves to a different extent. A 'cheat' amounts to an error and the same
cheat will give different errors for non-identical models.

It is interesting that if you follow the money you soon find the pressure
building to fiddle.

"In reality, some models emit 50% more CO2 than the official figures claim,
while others emit some 15% more than claimed." ....

Fascinating.

An article linked in that piece also specified that several efficiency
models, according to the manufacturers, "deliver between 70mpg and 75mpg,
while the [independent] test figures ranged from 46mpg to 53mpg."

Do you think there is enough "real world" data on mileage and emissions to
calculate a "correction factor" that could be applied to manufacturers'
published claims?

As the money gets bigger and there is more focus on these metrics, the
temptation to cut corners, figuratively and literally, is strong.

The idea of independent validation of claims is sound.
