[Stoves] A simple method of soot measurement

How about a filter holder designed for vacuum filtration where a white filter paper is placed on the holder and a vacuum is applied at a known air flow rate through the filter. Snap shots taken during the run and the final weight per total unit air volume calculated at the end. Perhaps plotted real time with snapshots taken every few seconds. That will keep someone busy.

How about a metal tray above the exhaust that is filled with ice to condense the exhaust and let the condensation drip on a white cloth. You could change or move the cloth to see how you are doing.

Dear Anil,

Very interesting.

I am sure during the research you have tried many things so I ask did you try using white construction paper that could easily be replaced?

And did you try pointing the camera 90 degrees from the light pattern to see if it is sensitive enough to measure the reflected light directly from the airborne particles? Just wondering.

And how do we relate the gained weight on the plate to the mass per meter of air?

I just down loaded the free app you mention to my new i-phone and am amazed at what these phones can do. Yesterday I discovered it can measure heart rate!

Regards

Frank

Hello stovers,

We have developed a simple method of soot measurement. www.nariphaltan.org/sootpaper.pdf

Feedback, comments and suggestions are welcome.
