Understanding how a stove performs in the field is critical for ensuring that the technology is having the desired impacts, and field data helps stove designers make continual improvements that lead to greater uptake.  In 2012 and 2013 Aprovecho Research Center, with support from the U.S. EPA and Winrock International, conducted Controlled Cooking Test (CCT)* field studies and provided technical training for organizations working to promote cleaner, more efficient cooking technologies in Vietnam (2012), Mexico (2013), and Nepal (2013).

Join us for a webinar on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 11:00 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) to hear results from the three CCT studies and a discussion of how these results can inform and improve cookstove design, performance and use.  The webinar will also provide an overview of the capacity building workshops, which took place ahead of each field study in all three locations.  The primary objective of these workshops was to equip participants from multiple organizations working in the country and region with knowledge of cookstove design principles and testing procedures so they could successfully improve the design, performance, and use of their stoves. The workshops provide an unmatched opportunity for participants to interact at a country/regional level through hands-on, practical exercises, interactive discussions and real world practice.

*Controlled Cooking Test (CCT)

The Controlled Cooking Test (CCT) is designed to assess the performance of an improved stove relative to the common or traditional stoves that the improved model is meant to replace. The CCT is conducted in a semi-controlled setting, to minimize variables and allow tests to be reproduced, but using local fuels, pots, and cooks/practices to better simulate how the stove is used in homes.

Webinar participation is free. For the web portion, a high-speed internet connection is required. The webinar technology allows attendees to listen to audio through their computer or by phone. Additional log-in information will be provided upon registration.

About the speaker:


Mr. Mike Hatfield

Mike Hatfield is Director of International Projects at Aprovecho Research Center specializing in stove design, testing and training.  Mr. Hatfield has worked with Aprovecho for more than ten years, and has coordinated stove technology and testing trainings throughout Central America, Africa, and Asia. He is co-designer of the popular “Justa” griddle stove that has been disseminated throughout Central and South America, and supported the development of India’s first mass produced single pot rocket stove that has now been manufactured in the hundreds of thousands. Mr. Hatfield’s consulting, testing, and training skills have benefited numerous agencies and organizations worldwide, including the Asia Regional Cookstove Program, CARE, Development Alternatives, Enterprise Works, the Shell Foundation, Trees, Water & People, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USAID, and the World Health Organization. Mr. Hatfield holds a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and Winrock International have been engaged in the household energy field for many years, including through coordination of the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) and its 590 Partners working in 117 countries from 2002-2012. Since the integration of PCIA and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves in 2012, Winrock and the U.S. EPA have continued working to increase the exchange of technical information among public and private organizations working in the global household energy and health sectors through local capacity building, targeted technical assistance and field studies and global knowledge sharing. The goal of these activities is to promote effective approaches that lead to increased use of clean, reliable, affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices.
