There is a delightful paper by Jeremy Wartluft who was developing and
testing stoves in Monserrat in 1984.

It contains at the end quite a number of stove designs, largely for
charcoal. The discussion about 'what works' is surprisingly up to date. That
means we haven't learned much in the past 30 years, we just have to apply
it.  Heh heh.
