Tuesday's presentation at the World Bank titled 'Creating a Culture of
Context' is available for download. It is on the use of the cultural context
for testing used in the Clean Stove Initiative - Indonesia.

The first half is the presentation given before the question round. It
describes the need to conduct laboratory testing in a manner that predicts
performance in use so when a stove selection is made, the rated performance
is delivered on the ground.  One purpose of the presentation is to create
awareness of the need for the "context of the testing" to reflect the
community into which the product is being sold. This approach has already
been used for several years in Ulaanbaatar's Clean Air Project and realized
a 45% reduction in the city's ambient PM2.5 level in only two years.

 

The second half (which was not shown in detail) is an examination of the
'efficiency' metric with a number of useful diagrams showing where the heat
flows in different stove types, and how the flows change under different
conditions.  Efficiency numbers quoted for a stove may not be the efficiency
number you were looking for. The lesson is: Ask detailed questions when you
are provided with an 'efficiency' number.
