Dear Friends of Testing

There is a new document from China "Standards and Test Methods for Household
Biomass Cookstoves: Lessons from International Experience". It is available
in two languages. The English version is at:

https://collaboration.worldbank.org/docs/DOC-15091

The direct link to the document is

https://collaboration.worldbank.org/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadBody/15091-1
02-2-20396/Stove%20Standards%20Report_6-4-2015.pdf

It contains a great deal of technical discussion about many point addressed
on this list, and looks at the following test methods:

Indian Emissions Test IS 13152

WBT v4.2.3 Emissions Test

HTP Emissions Test

Chinese Emissions Test NY/T 2370-2013

And a summary of several comparisons

For our discussion purposes there is an excellent chart of heat flow paths
from the raw fuel to the final uses or losses. When discussing a performance
metric, whatever it is named, it may be helpful to look at the chart to be
sure you have selected the portions of the heat or energy that you want to
report, either absolutely or relative to one another. See Figure 2.2 on p20.

Detailed formulae are given for each element of the chart which provides a
snapshot of where the test methods stood and how they calculated things in
2014.

Using the chart one can, for example, avoid reporting a 'thermal efficiency'
using numbers that represent energy that has not been thermalized, or
providing as a metric a ratio you have not intended, in the finer details.

Another interesting section looks at when to end a test, with a test on
emissions after the test indicating that there are considerable emissions of
pollutants after the official count has stopped.

There are numerous suggestions for correction of calculations and to a
certain extent, what to test.

Regards

Crispin
