Dear Alex

The average PM per MJNET was 8 mg 14 minutes and 40 seconds after ignition. The pot was put on 4 minutes after 15 seconds after ignition. That means there was enough heat gained by the pot in 10 minutes and 25 seconds to bring the average in line with LPG.

You are correct the LKPG would start cleaner.

Because LPG composition is not ‘standard’ in any way, it helps to remember that a burner head may not be optimised to the fuel, even though it is gaseous. Because it is common to have the LPG flame touching the pot, it is not such a big surprise that the wood pellets burn cleaner, if the designer took care of that aspect.

I recall from the Stove Testing Camp in July at your place, the burner you demonstrated was exceedingly clean. Was there a viable number from the PM machine? I do not recall that there was. If you know the EA value and the burn rate, and there is a raw concentration number, we could calculate it. I am interested to know if your burner is that clean.

The cold start is not ignored. The measurement goes from ignition to the completing of the cooking cycle.

Because there is hardly anything to measure, I caution again that such results are to be viewed skeptically until a special experiment can be conducted.

The ignition is the smokiest portion of the test so how the fuel is ignited comes to dominate the total emitted. Choosing a different kindling material will give a statistically different result. This is the case as well in Mongolia where the stoves are now so clean it has devolved into a fire lighting competition. Most of the stoves don't emit anything after they get going well.

Still, I take you point. If the LPG rate is 8 mg/MJ delivered, as was cited by an Indian delegate to the ‎S4G conference a couple of weeks ago, then at some point the pellet stove will match it because almost all the PM is emitted by minute six.

I will have a look.

Crispin,

So the cold start is ignored? Assuming that propane starts cleaner??, how long does the stove have to run before the total gross emissions, including the start-up, match those from the propane stove?

Alex
