Frank,
The 6-8 mm pellets are the result of wanting to have a uniform fuel that is easily handled automatically in bulk. Most ring die pellets go up to about 20 mm. Then you get into briquettes. Krista did some wok on small scale larger pellets a few years ago.

Subject: [Stoves] SIZE OF PELLETS
Greetings Stovers,
I’ve tested many pellets made of different materials and quality all over the map BUT they were always the same size! Why?
Are there pellets made of larger diameter? like a centimeter or two? Is there a reason all pellets are the same diameter? and can they be made larger?
Thanks
Frank

P.S. Thanks Ron for the latest updates.
