 Dear HEDON Members,

Happy New Year!

January has been a busy and exciting kick-start to 2016 at HEDON, with many projects and partnerships both new and existing underway. This year, the HEDON team aims to develop Boiling Point even further, with many plans including the audio recording of Boiling Point, which will substantially increase our off-line impact. We look forward to sharing these with you.

Don't forget, at HEDON we love to hear and share your news, ideas, and stories. We are currently running a photo competition to appear on the front cover of BP68 - Energy in Emergency Settings. If you have a bright, engaging and interesting photo that fits this theme, then please send your picture to <mailto:bp at hedon.info?subject=Cover%20Photo%20Competition> bp at hedon.info by Sunday 7 February. Find out about all our competitions and calls for papers by clicking on the social media tabs at the end of this newsletter to keep up to date with the latest HEDON and wider household energy news.

With the imminent arrival of BP68 (February '16), the HEDON team is interested in publishing an issue of Boiling Point titled 'From Policy to Practice' which will explore the growing role of policy and advocacy in energy access and what this means for energy practitioners in the field. We need your support to create this issue and to post it out to thousands of off-line readers worldwide. If your organisation is interested in sponsoring or becoming a guest editor for this issue, please contact <mailto:bp at hedon.info> bp at hedon.info.

Tata: Going off-grid, researchers tackle rural electrification in India
More than 300 million people in India have no access to grid electricity, a problem especially acute in rural communities which can be difficult and expensive to reach with grid power. At MIT’s Tata Center for Technology and Design, researchers are exploring ways to extend electricity access to such communities using micro-grids - independent electricity generation and distribution systems that service one village or even just a few houses. New study: Identifying and reducing the health and safety impacts of fuel-based lighting
The inequity of costly and low-quality fuel-based lighting is compounded by adverse health and safety risks including burns, indoor air pollution, poisoning due to accidental ingestion of kerosene fuel by children, compromised visual health, maternal health issues, and reduced service in health facilities illuminated solely or sporadically with fuel-based lighting. This article compiles and synthesises information on the health and safety impacts of fuel-based lighting from 135 reports spanning 33 countries. GACC: Increased focus on behaviour change communication activities in 2016
Over the last five years, GACC and its partners have made significant progress toward developing a thriving clean cookstove and fuel market, in particular in fostering an enabling environment and strengthening supply. Still, generating demand and sustained use at scale remains a challenge in many markets. GACC is expanding its efforts to meet this challenge with increased support for behaviour change communication (BCC). This year, GACC supported pilot campaigns will be implemented in Bangladesh, Ghana, Guatemala and Uganda. These initiatives will provide an opportunity to test and better understand the efficacy of various BCC approaches, in particular channels and messaging for reaching households. GIZ: Working to ensure local jobs in booming petroleum and natural gas markets
One of the world’s biggest natural gas fields lies off the coast of Mozambique and Tanzania. Kenya and Uganda have deposits of both natural gas and petroleum. The responsible exploitation of these resources can help to drive sustainable development across East Africa provided that national budgets are boosted by the revenue generated from extraction licences and local people also share in the economic benefits. The petroleum and natural gas industry needs suppliers and service providers, and that means jobs and training opportunities. GIZ is working to ensure that the jobs needed are created locally. The project is partly funded by the UK firm BG Group. Read more <http://hedon.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d7576a5bf72f0cb32babac35a&id=0ad6705c4d&e=516b035751> here.
