garden to tend

My friend Greg Bixler, who does water pumps in Africa, summed up the 
question in just a few words.  He says, "Solve a problem they think they 
have, not a problem you think they have."

We look at 4 million or so deaths per year from smoke and think that surely 
that is a huge problem, but for each of the 3 billion people we are trying 
to serve, the odds that they will die this year are 4 million divided by 3 
billion, or 0.13%.  Based on my limited travels in Honduras and India, more 
urgent problems would be the narco gangs (Honduras) and being hit by a truck 
while crossing the road (India).

For someone who cooks outdoors smoke is never going to seem like a real 
problem, no matter what the World Health Organization says.  It's a big 
atmosphere.  It seems that when someone who cooks indoors gets a clean stove 
(or a dirty stove with a chimney) their reaction is often positive, not 
because their health is improved, but because their kitchen is clean and 
their clothes stay clean.  Looking good seems to be a universal problem 
people want to solve.

And to Greg Bixler's words, I would add the following, "And don't create a 
new problem they don't currently have."  Stove that require more wood 
chopping or more tending time than current cooking methods aren't going to 
appeal to many.

Magazine articles about efficient stoves love to talk about the difficulties 
and dangers of gathering wood (snakes, violence, walking long distances) but 
how common is that really?  My own travels are limited, but everywhere I've 
been people seem to have enough wood.

So, let us strive to give up our fixation on what we can provide but instead 
look freshly at what they want or need.  Perhaps we can design stoves that 
solve peoples' obvious problems (that is, obvious to them) then also solve 
their non-obvious problems.

My personal goal is to develop a stove that will burn long enough on a batch 
of fuel to bring the pot to boiling, then either simmer with minimal tending 
or (better yet) hold in most of the heat to simmer with the heat from the 
coals left from the high power burn.  The stove would burn large or small 
wood and possibly wetter wood, which probably means a large combustion 
chamber.  A chimney and a super stable pot would be nice, and I think that's 
possible.  There goes the smoke up the chimney.  This summer I'll start 
working on such a stove, and I will not measure the efficiency, at least not 
at first.  I will measure, and try to maximize, the amount of time between 
fuel feedings.  And always keep in mind the question, if my meals depended 
on it, would this stove really solve my problems?

I'm a newbie in this field and this is a very "hot" subject in more ways 
than one, but here's my 2c.

Stoves aren't sexy large-scale tech, so international donors and aid 
agencies may not be enthusiastic in promoting them. As for users, there 
could be reluctance to try something new when a 3-stone fire or mud stove 
has been good enough for so long - you would need to demonstrate how these 
new stoves save a lot of time, fuel and money before users are convinced to 
switch. Maybe emissions is the least important consideration for the 
majority of users.

I'd get this stuff out there, make it good enough and make it cheap, while 
empowering local producers and users. Don't sweat the numbers, just get as 
many stoves on the ground as possible.
