It is interesting as it  suggests  mechanisms by which TLUD devices
may be improved.

Of more interest is that it scales up the devices for  an
horticultural scale use, makes full use of the heat released and
provides char where most char-making remains wasteful at the larger
scale. I note the relative low yield of char from the residues they
have as a feedstock/fuel, 15%  where up to 25% is available from dry
wood in TLUD burns.

Nowhere in the paper does it suggest syngas is produced; the
implication is this is normal pyrolysis offgas combined with the
products of the primary air  which drives the descending pyrolysis
front.
