*Meeting Our Goal: *
*Reaching More Families in Kenya*

*HAPPY JAMHURI DAY!* On Dec. 12, 2016, Nathan hand delivered 30 new Wisdom
stoves to Broadvision families on Jamhuri/Kenyan Independence Day! We are
so grateful to all of you for supporting these families, most of which
include HIV positive widowed mothers or families raising orphans. We pray
that these stoves will bring relief by eliminating the smoke they normally
breathe while cooking, especially with their weakened immune systems.
Wisdom stoves will reduce their need to collect or buy wood to cook, saving
them time and money. Read more here about our ongoing Hope to Live
Initiative.

*FLAMINGO FARMS:* The Wisdom Innovations staff conducted two days of
training at Flamingo Farms in Nanyuki, Kenya. This farm is a large
vegetable and flower exporter and employs thousands of workers. This
community is host site for a Wisdom stove trial, and we hope to be the
brand chosen to collaborate with the Swiss company supporting this project.
If our M2 is the winning cookstove design, based on feedback from the trial
stove users, we will be able to distribute 1,200 new Wisdoms stoves into
the community. The ability to create charcoal while cooking in a safer,
healthier way will change many lives there!
*WINROCK GRANT:* Our business partner in Kenya, Wisdom Innovations,
recently received a $25,000 grant from Winrock International (funded by
USAID) in order to pilot innovative financing strategies and affordable
payment options for fuel-efficient cookstoves. Over the next 4 months, our
Workshop Manager, Dan Waithaka, will continue to lead Wisdom stove trials
in new-to-us communities of Narok and Kajiado. In the photo above,
families learn about best practices with the M2 cookstove.

The two most common methods of cooking in our partner community of Kinangop
are a traditional three-stone fire and a hibachi-type grill. Our Wisdom
stove design addresses the serious health concerns related to the
three-stone fire, while also creating charcoal for future use! Check out
this video to learn more about the crucial role that charcoal plays in
Tanzania, a reflection of the issues that our Kenyan families face.

Starting the fire for the noon meal, Njeri is leaning with her head to the
right, blowing into a two foot metal pipe to get the fire started. Her
youngest child is strapped to her back. The smoke is thick and choking,
stinging the eyes. Because all meals are cooked, the fire must be started
at least three times a day. Kenyan women work in this position, bent at the
waist, back straight, while working in the fields, chopping wood or
gardening.

Nathan took this picture on a trip to the market in Engineer, the closest
larger town to the Wisdom Workshop, during the short rains of November.
Vendors cover wares at night and display them to sell seven days a week.
Sunday is the busiest day when worshipers arrive in town to attend
churches.
Kimani, Nathan and John explore the Wildlife Sanctuary in Naivasha in
December. Would you like to learn more about Wisdom staff and volunteers?

*Did You Know?*
*Key Motivating Factors from the World Health Organization (WHO)*

1. *Around 3 billion people* cook and heat their homes using open fires and
simple stoves burning biomass (wood, animal dung and crop waste) and coal.

2. *Over 4 million people* die prematurely from illness attributable to the
household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels.

3. Fuel gathering consumes considerable time for *women and children*,
limiting other productive activities (e.g. income generation) and taking
children away from school. In less secure environments, women and children
are at risk of injury and violence during fuel gathering.
