Andrew:

"It may well be with biomass and discussing stoves used would be good.
Pointing out the lack of electricity as a result of the political troubles
in the region is not much to do with the discussion, however much we feel
about the problem.

There are plenty of places with poor or unaffordable electricity. "

*** Two stories on charcoal in Gaza:

Gazans turn wood into charcoal
<http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4362635,00.html> Ynetnews, 27
April 2013. Says there were eight charcoal workshops in Gaza and that
retail price was $2/kg. Case for fuel savings.
Israel Shuts Down PA Charcoal Operation Over Pollution
<http://hamodia.com/2016/11/18/israel-shuts-down-pa-charcoal-operation-over-pollution/>,
Hamodia 18 November 2016. Says IDF took action to prevent illegal forest
clearance and pollution. Case for cleaner alternatives.

If not electricity, charcoal ban will ignite a war out of frustration over
suffering in cold.

Global warming would be so welcome; people die of cold more often than of
heat.

The stovers should get their heads out of the firebox; poor or unaffordable
electricity - or the inability to finance even $10-20 induction stove or a
kettle, water heater, room heater - is the major reason for high charcoal
demand in urban areas. LPG can take some portion of the demand, electricity
another, and fuel-saving charcoal/coal stoves will have lesser burden to
carry in terms of making a difference soon enough to be noticed.

It is all one market, though quite fragmented as economists would call it.
There is a competition for biomass stoves but there are opportunities for
such stoves too.

Fighting over testing protocols and IWA blather results because the stakes
are so low and many stovers don't know what else to do. EPA can make fools
of all of us, and the 3 billion people.
