[Stoves] Another attack on solid fuels by public health Stoves Digest, Vol 81, Issue 19

Hi Paul,

We haven’t really communicated since the USBI conference about potential projects in Mexico, but you recent post on the stoves list about tortilla cookers prompted us to share our progress on that front.

As a reintroduction, Bill Knauss first started to play around with TLUDs about five years ago, primarily to create a stove that poor families in Palomas, MX, could use for cooking and space heating. We have moved into somewhat larger devices that are continuous feed TLUDs, but have still been refining the small batch units. Here is the charbecue we had at Aprovecho:

The general concept is a TLUD that serves as a core unit with a range of “attachments” that fit to it. One of Bill’s early variations was a plancha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z6q3erCzNo

The current version of the base unit looks like this (with barbecue on top):

We have an air-to-air heat exchanger, or a water heating exchanger that simply sits on top in place of the barbecue. The air heater is shown, but the water heater uses the same core.

Inspired by the “magic wok” at the stove camp, we built a version that is specific to highly efficient bean cooking using a pressure cooker. We can cook beans from an dry, unsoaked starting condition to finished in 15 minutes! This one can easily be vented to the outside. The pressure cooker sits in an insulated well and is surrounded by the hot flue gases for efficient heat transfer. The insulation is biochar.

Our current project is a continuous TLUD that uses a 55 gallon drum as a feedstock hopper and a vertical 6” auger tube that can accept a cone for adjusting to a range of pyrolysis front diameters. These were initially conceived to be lab units, or building heat sources, but would work well for commercial cooking scenarios, where heat is needed without interruption for long periods of time.

Best,

Karin (and all Stovers).

Thank you for your comments and for your reserarch.

I reply to only your final paragraph, in which I have empahsized one sentence:

Finally, we do not represent public health and promoting clean fuels when possible is not a war against solid fuels. It is my aspiration that one day everybody has access to clean fuels for all their needs, and this may require switching to electricity, biogas and other clean fuels (clean from the point of view of health). It may require the development of new technologies that may use solid fuels. Helping poor people to have access to LPG or electricity with a subsidy may be part of the solution.

Maybe there will be newer technololgies, but one solid-biomass-fuel technology for stoves already exists. That is TLUD micro-gasifification. I encourage you (and any readers) to become informed about TLUDs stoves. Best starting place is my website: drtlud.com <http://drtlud.com> (too much to try to summarize here.)

Much work still remains to be done, but what is reality should be embraced and then the work can progress faster.

Specific to Latin America (especially Mexico and Central America) is the placement of TLUD firepower under the planchas for making tortillas. More efforts would be appreciated. Please contact me about that if interested.

Paul
