[Stoves] UNBS moves to ban ‘fake’ stove manufacturers.

Thank you, Nolbert.

I wonder what effect this would have on the market for stoves.

On the one hand, I see your claim "When a customer buys a stove and it does
not save charcoal or breaks down easily, it affects the entire market,”

This surely is in part dependent on the customer's incentives and purpose,
and the benefit/cost computation by the customer, no?

If I have a woodlot in southern Uganda and ready supply of charcoal for my
use and sale, I might well want to cook more, even to sell food instead of
charcoal. Similarly, I might buy a cheap stove even if I have heard it
breaks down easily.

I am not minimizing the importance of meeting the customer's expectations
and, as in the case of solar lanterns and solar home systems that I have
some experience with in Uganda (some years back), I know that cheap,
low-quality imports spread rapidly while systems meeting international
standards did not pick up except for some large-scale public sector users.

I would hope that nobody is promising to save lives with stoves. That would
be a hard thing for UNBS to seek compliance with.

I also happen to have looked into Uganda DALYs - perhaps the only
national-level case I systematically examined - and can confidently say
that Mr. Wanjohi's claim is bogus, fake news.
