Dear Paul

The Rocket Mass Heater was developed by Ianto Evans after he left Aprovecho. He has been promoting it for 30 years.

As you can see from the video, the air control is there, but iffy. It has way too much oxygen which explains the low efficiency. Obviously results vary because they are home-made and the advice given on line (there is a discussion forum) is based on experience, for the most part not measurements.

There is a thriving support group based around the cob house (clay house) movement on the West Coast. Contact the Cob Cottage Company.

Numbers:
40 lbs of pellets = 18 kg = 310 MJ
Burn time 6 hrs = 14.35 kW
Delivered heat 4 kW, he says, = 28% efficiency

The guys making the mass heaters with heated benches and beds are more efficient, but they too have an issue with high excess air. A lot of heat goes out in a high volume of warm air.

VERY nicely done.

There are two parts to such devices;
A.  Make the heat     (in this case, a Rocket-style stove.   But it could be TLUD heat, even from 55 gallon (200 Liter) barrel-size TLUDs. and from other heat sources.

B.  Capture the heat    ---  Very nicely done and explained.

In  this case, it heats water and air.    So it is not a "high-mass heater" in the sense of heating bricks and stones that will radiate the heat back later.

Is anyone on this Stoves Listserv following such work or doing such work?
