[Stoves] News on Nigeria: A "green stove" saves lives - and the environment!

So long as you don't ask whose life and whose environment.

There is not an iota of evidence that switching from wood and coal to
kerosene, gas and electricity saved any particular life. Except perhaps
mine.

This story is about ethanol gel stoves - Femi Oye and his company Green
Energy and Biofuels in Nigeria.

Back in 2003 I visited a sugar ethanol refinery south of Blantyre, a
warehouse in Blantyre where gel was made and packed, and saw it being sold,
along with the stove, in supermarkets there and another place I don't now
remember. I recommended to IFC that the enterprise be invested in, but
"green fuels" or stoves were not faddish enough then. IFC fell in line when
Hillary came calling.

I think by now the time is ripe to promote electric induction stoves as a
part of the national electrification plan. LPG is still too expensive, and
we have silly - misleading or inconclusive - epidemiological reports that
even a Philips stove did little for "health benefits".

Nigeria has an electrification program and an "improved stove" program.
Monies to be made selling lives and global cooling. GACC has won the media
war.

" The Kike Green Cook stove is a portable, reinforced, enamel-coated
metallic stove with a safety regulator and a steel bowl in the middle that
serves as a tank for the cooking gel. The gel is 100 percent organic and
made from renewable energy sources – water hyacinth, sawdust, grass, food
and agricultural waste. According to GEB, it is safer, cleaner, and burns
more efficiently than liquefied petroleum gas, kerosene, firewood or
charcoal, which are the popular cooking fuels in Nigeria "

" With a production of 50,000 biogel litres per day, a factory in Lagos,
and a business presence in six African countries, Green Energy Biofuels
(GEB) is aiming to fight climate change. "

" A litre of GEB’s biogel costs about 360 naira while a litre of kerosene
sells for 220 naira. Liquefied petroleum gas is even cheaper. Considering
the price difference, convincing the average Nigerian to opt for biogel
instead of conventional fossil fuels will be difficult."
