Dear Darpan
What a waste of wood. That has to be said first.
What a confused set of thoughts this guy expresses.
First, he seriously believes that CO2 is a pollutant. It is not. It is plant food. That is why the wood contains carbon in the first place. Every living thing on the planet is dependent directly or indirectly on carbon from the air for food.
Second, he assumes that CO is an inherent emissions from the burning of wood, which is incorrect. CO emissions varies hugely depending on the carbon combustion efficiency of the burner. It could be any value from 0% to 15% of the carbon input to the fire. It is not a property of the fuel, but rather a property of the stove.
Third, he assumes that PM2.5 is also an inherent emissions from wood combustion. Same thing applies: there may be nearly no PM2.5 emitted, or a huge amount - it depends on the stove. There is no PM2.5 inside wood, waiting to come out. If the WHO also thinks this is the case, they are just as misinformed.
Fourth, "Let's do some math": Burning 1 kg of wood releases about 1.83 kg of CO2, not 403 g. The carbon content of 403 g of CO2 is only 110 g of carbon. Wood is about 50% carbon on a mass basis.
Fifth, Burning 500 quintals of wood releases 91,650 kg of CO2, not ≈20,000 kg.
Sixth, if we were somehow to drive the CO2 down to the pre-industrial low mark, food production on Planet Earth would drop 30%. That should judged a be a crime against humanity.
The first thing the Uttar Pradesh pollution control people should prevent is this type of mental pollution reaching the impressionable young.
