That is a mass fraction.

For interest, below 0.1 microns the particles have so little mass they are reported by 'counts'. If you have a Grimm particle counter it reports the counts per 'size bin'. This allows the application of a density per bin because the large particles are mostly 'sand' and the small ones are much less dense.

If you want to make a simple correction, use 1.0 as the density of PM 1 and 2.5 and 2.7 for those between PM2.5 and 10.

Be careful when presented with numbers to ask if the PM2.5 is included in the PM10 number. There are now two methods of reporting.

Regards
Crispin

Interesting result.

Curious. Is the 90% figure based on particle count or weight, or something else?

Here's an interesting study, published today:

What is interesting is that, even with long term exposure, they only found the specific biomarkers in PM2.5-10 (coarse PM), but not in ultrafine PM (<0.15 um) or fine PM (<2.5 um).
90% of wood smoke PM is smaller than 1 um.

The cleaner the air in North America, the more common asthma there is. Is cleaner air contributing to the shortening of lives in North America? On the face of it, possibly.

"...The report also shows that asthma hospitalization rates tend to be higher in urban areas in Canada, compared to rural and remote areas.

"Our air is pretty pristine, and air pollution is shown to be a factor associated with asthma exacerbation," said Brendan Hanley, Yukon's Chief Medical Officer of Health.

In places such as Nova Scotia and Ontario, asthma hospitalization rates are much higher in urban centres compared to rural, the report said. A similar comparison wasn't included for Yukon because of a lack of data.

But Hanley said Yukon's air quality is not perfect. He says air pollution tends to spike in residential areas due to wood-burning, but those tend to be short-term exposures.

Other possible reason for Yukon's low rate could be attributed to good access to primary care for children with asthma and good rates of controls in terms of medication, according to Hanley."
