In the days when touring caravans were lit by gas mantle the gas/air mix 
was adjusted by a screw collar covering the air hole by the jet.  This 
was loose enough to readjust itself every time by road vibrations.  If 
you didn't get it right before lighting, it very easily accumulated a 
thick layer of soot on the mantle and clay burner head.
