Crispin:

I am requesting David Stein, cc'd here, to respond to this.

I met David in Vanuatu in September 2008 and gained a lot of understanding
about Vanuatu, solar lighting business, EU and AusAID contracts, and much
else during about a year that he and I used to meet regularly. He and I
used to talk about "improved stoves" as well, but it was only after my
departure that he picked some stove design and sold them in the main market
of the capital city Port Vila. I don't know if he manufactured them there
or whether he sold them on other islands as well.

I do have a rather strong impression that charcoal was already in the Port
Vila market and that there were some varieties of artisanal charcoal stove
for household size. I hope David contributes to this discussion.

Nikhil

PS: All-Ceramic are probably impossible to make in Port Vila and the
shipping costs from China or Australia may also be high, for small loads. I
hope David gives you a reality check.
