[Stoves] Cooking energy requirements

Dear Tom

That is quite possible. It looks familiar.

It may have been something KK Prasad assembled. You will recall in the early 2000's he attended ETHOS meetings.

The root of the idea was these guys were in Mech Eng and were "completing the circle" for energy in cooking.

For me, it wasn't a big issue. The numbers involved are relatively small. The defenders of the WBT were making such large conceptual, mathematical, statistical and uncertainty errors, the fact that they also didn't consider that food absorbs energy when cooking, was a blip on the screen.

I have recently reviewed about 50 CDM, Gold Standard and WISDOM documents. Not one of them was concerned enough about stove performance assessment methods to find out if they were fit for purpose or included things like their ability to "cook food" - you know, that sticky stuff on the plate.

If anyone finds a list of foods with a cooking time and how it is affected by temperature that is the source I found. The cooking time of cabbage is quite strongly affected by temperature and it tops the list. It is something like 30 minutes at 98 and 5 at 105 C. If you want to save fuel, use a pressure cooker because the effect is more dramatic than any slightly improves stove.

Suppose Kevin promoted stones under a sheltered fire and pressure cookers. The combination would reduce the fuel raw fuel requirement for yams, cabbage, and so on by far more than anything else.

Nikhil likes the idea of off-grid electric induction cooked combined with pressure cookers. A lot. He is looking at the whole system and low income people are pretty good at wholism. I'd like to field test the concept with pot vendors leading the charge instead of stove builders.

Let's see how much system input energy it takes to cook food, not how much is embedded in the food itself.

Best wishes
Crispin

Crispin,

Was the data on the cookstoves website that Eindhoven maintained for many years? It was still up a few years ago but I haven't been there for awhile.

Dear all,
The specific energy requirements of different cooking materials sharer by Mr. Crispin is very much useful to all, who work on cookstoves development with focus on energy efficiency.
Now the cook stove efficiency can be verified with the efficiency of WBT and may be quoted on actual cooking efficiency of food/meal.

Best regards,
P Raman, Ph.D
