Nikhil,

Yes, I am going to Kenya for the CCA Forum, plus some days prior and after for any possible stove work.

I am proud of you for having ended your message with some positive / hopeful words:
“I am hoping that with EPA and DOE out of the way, CCA can figure out some other way of operating as an effective voice in Washington. Their money and capacity can still be put to some good use. “

I have applied for one of the 18 “Innovation Expo” slots. Let’s see if Woodgas technology plus CharTrac carbon accounting (with blockchain) plus IoT (Internet of Things) integrated together can make the accepted list.

Who else is going?

Paul

Paul:

Are you going? What is this all about? Two months to the event, and the program is still basically undefined - https://www.cleancooking2019.org/program/ . "Innovation Expo"? "B2B Matchmaking"? Site visits? Gimme a break!

I am irritated that ESMAP and Chevron, EU and Shell, support a silly title "the sector’s flagship event".

UNF never learned that just getting a bunch of people together doesn't constitute a "sector", and that the past "flagship events" turned out to be farces.

Even here, one of the sponsors is Ger.Invest, "a European programme that aims at mobilising investments in decentralised renewable energy projects.". So presumably it's not all about gas; maybe renewables electricity for cooking and solar, biomass cooking as well.

In another post you bemoaned "It is typical that there is extremely little discussion about or by the CCA on the Stoves Listserv. It has been that way a long long time. "

Any thought why? Could it be that stovers gave up on UNF for help with anything - money or intellectual leadership, what with the booklet produced by the MIT D-Lab in 2017, or the failure of the Dutch-financed, Deutsche Bank-run business financing initiative, or even the promise that "international standards" would lead to a miraculous avalanche of clean cookstoves?

And that CCA gave up on stovers because, after all, UNF are merely contractor guns-for-hire, and none of its financiers - USEPA no longer, probably nor even DfID and the Norwegians - wanted anything to do with the work that stovers have spent lifetime careers on?

Honesty is in short supply in Washington. But memories are elastic; short or long, depending on convenience.

Things can go wrong. Mistakes in cost and schedule estimates are legion; I spent decades on the engineering and regulatory, financing, procurement roots of it.

It is safe to now say that whatever my vicious attacks on GACC, I have been vindicated. GACC was an EPA show, an unholy marriage with the UN Foundation and a conspiracy - yes, I have no hesitation in my bluntness - with the WHO and the Gates Foundation.

But that is par for the course in Washington. Big moral dreams are sold here for the sake of careers. Sometimes with absolute integrity - EPA staff, UNF directors, Berkeley killers-for-hire (sorry, that's what Kirk's attributions amount to).

Then the cycle turns. Has to. Cynicism is the fuel of compromises and renewal in Washington.

I am hoping that with EPA and DOE out of the way, CCA can figure out some other way of operating as an effective voice in Washington. Their money and capacity can still be put to some good use.

Dear Stovers,

The message below just arrived. It is addressed to “Dear Partner” (I am one), but you can become a partner rather easily and the invitations is then relevant for you.

I hope that many Stovers will attend. I probably will, but am not yet sure.

This is a good topic to discuss on our Stoves Listserv.
