Dear Friends

This is really of interest to people living in Ontario, however it points a way forward to include more biomass-fired heating and cogeneration of electricity.

It is public knowledge and posted here to stimulate discussion.

There is a new technological breakthrough for Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) which should hit the market in a few years. It gives a dramatic improvement in conversion efficiency (heat to electricity). According to disparate sources, the efficiency might be in the range of 35% and the cost is slashed. We can talk of $100 per KW for the modules.

The laws in Ontario have been updated with advice from the CSA technical committee rewriting B415.1 - the standard for space heating appliances that burn wood. There is even a new method for assessing the emissions of site-built masonry heaters in B415.1. The general idea is to promote wood fuel over diesel in remote communities.

As new TEGs become available, it is a very attractive option and smaller and smaller scale.

Regards
Crispin

Please find attached an opinion editorial by Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Jeff Yurek, highlighting the benefits of combined heat and power systems in Ontario and the province's commitment to support them. We hope that you will enjoy this article and also share it with your membership, through newsletters, direct email or on your websites. As you know, the decision posting on the Environmental Registry is live, and we want to reach as many people as possible, to raise awareness of this important initiative.

The province remains committed to making the approval and implementation of CHP technologies as efficient a possible. As you know, the changes Ontario has brought forward help to match up the required level of approval with other comparable energy technologies and environmental impacts, saving businesses and communities time and money, all while ensuring appropriate environmental protections are in place.

We hope that you will share this article with your membership. If you receive questions, please keep us informed through an email to enviropermissions at ontario.ca<mailto:enviropermissions at ontario.ca>
