Dear Andrew

Norbert Senf provides the following comment on this report. MHA is the Masonry Heaters Association. They have a technical discussion site like this Stoves list specifically for masonry appliances like pizza ovens, retained heat space heaters and so on.

Crispin

[It] looks like they only published it about 2 months ago.
There were 2 separate aspects to the Challenge, automated stoves and electricity producing stoves.
NYSERDA provided funding for Brookhaven to do the testing on the automated stoves, and MHA provided
volunteer manpower and equipment to do emissions testing on the electricity producing stoves with the Condar.

It was an interesting challenge to do dilution tunnel testing in the field, and MHA brought a 5 man crew and 3 complete Condar setups, and we did a total of 6 test runs most days. One of the biggest challenges was the very windy conditions on several days. This made it difficult if not impossible to control the sample flow rate on the Condars, as the flow controller doesn't like to see rapid fluctuations in stack pressure.

There's a photo story here:

Subject: [Stoves] heating stove test data

Hi all

It's been a bit quiet here so here's something slightly off topic.

A while back Crispin pointed me to a stove test challenge pdf done by Brookhaven National Laboratory, this report doesn't relate closely to cook stoves but on an initial skim through there are some interesting results.

The report is now published, it is lengthy:

The results should be more in keeping with actual use in a dwelling heated by wood as they reflect start up as well as hot running conditions.

These stoves are automated to some extent so conditions in the combustion chamber are far better than even the best tended cook stove could be.

Andrew
