All,

I have just spent a week at Aprovecho Research Center.  I attended the
Larry Winiarski Memorial service on Saturday.  There were lots of good
stories about Larry.

After the memorial I tested the bluff body stove that I wrote about
earlier.   Because of time constraints limited tests were done, but some
interesting things resulted anyway:

All tests used natural draft secondary air.  The burn time was 30
minutes.  The fuel reactor chamber is 5" (12.7 cm) in diameter.  I used
5 kg of soft wood pellets for the natural draft primary air tests, and
10 kg of pellets for forced draft primary air tests. In both cases,
mostly only char remained after the test.

The highest power level using forced primary air is the highest power
level that showed flat line particulates and low CO on the computer
readout.  The filters will be weighed and calculations done later.

The highest power level using forced primary air was just over three
times the highest power level using natural draft primary air.

The lowest power level using natural draft primary air was half the
highest power level using natural draft primary air.

That makes the turn down from the highest forced primary air to the
lowest using natural draft 6 to 1.

The highest forced primary setting boiled 5 liters of water from about
20C in 16 minutes.

A lot of heat was lost out the sides of the stove.  Better insulation
will be needed before it is tested again, which should increase the
power levels considerably without increasing emissions.
