Graham, I don’t think you are missing anything, apart from people not disclosing too much about their input materials for stoves.
Ceramic fibre / wool /blanket is quite commonly used in industrially produced metal stoves as insulation material (to substitute glass fibre or rock wool), but I don’t know anybody using it in clay stoves.
At least in the African countries I am familiar with most artisanal producers of metal stoves can’t find ceramic fibre locally as it has mostly to be imported and they rely on locally found materials.
