[Stoves] The Combined Heat and Biochar Gasifier

 The PM emissions from my gasifier averaged 9.1 micrograms per cubic meter
over 24 hours. In its definition of a clean cook stove, the World Health
Organization stipulates that PM emissions should not exceed 25 micrograms
per cubic meter. No problem here with respect to particulate matter: 9.1
micrograms is well below 25 micrograms.

According to WHO guidelines, carbon monoxide emissions should not exceed
28.40 ppm over a one hour period. The Lotus Fire Gasifier emitted very
little CO over a one hour period: only 3.925 ppm (well within the WHO
guidelines). The average CO emissions over 24 hours according to the WHO
guidelines should not exceed 5.68 ppm. The average CO emissions of the
gasifier was 0.491 ppm (again well within WHO guidelines).

So my gasifier easily meets standards set by the World Health Organization
in terms of particulate matter and carbon monoxide emissions. About 50% of
Vietnamese households burn firewood. The health problems associated with
this practice are truly horrendous. Burning firewood is one of the leading
causes of mortality in Vietnam. If these households stopped burning
firewood and used gasifiers, households would be protected from toxic
levels of human carcinogens, and human health in Vietnam would improve
dramatically.
