On the pizza oven, did you calculate the linear feet of
1/2 inch copper tubing necessary for this water jacket
heat takeoff?,<br>
I can't wait to see what sort of performance you get and
the application you put the hot water to.<br>

I've always wanted to see someone experiment with brazing
such a water jacket onto the upper barrel of a Jolly Roger
Oven. <br>

<p class="MsoNormal">I have been growing
bamboo for about 30 years and it was the
waste in the annual burning of trash
generated from harvesting, propagating and
thinning groves and clumps that first got me
in to thinking about utilising this material
to make biochar. At first I made heaps of
char by just putting our clean-up fires out
early by quenching when the flames have died
down and there is a pile of char and ash.
All the waste heat got to me and so for some
years now I have been concentrating on
cooking devices. I started with little tin
can stoves progressed up to my present
TLUDs. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal">It is about time I shared
with this group the fun I’ve been having
developing TLUD BBQs and now a pizza oven.
About a year ago I developed a very usable
TULD design based on recycled materials
including: </p>
<p><span style="font-family:Symbol;"><span>·<span

steel stock</b> pots as reactors, </p>
<p><span style="font-family:Symbol;"><span>·<span
style="font:7.0pt "Times New

mesh</b> provides space for secondary air,
a mount for the concentrator plate and
something to hook onto when hot</p>

style="font:7.0pt "Times New
Roman";"> </span></span></span><b>100
Lt drum</b> serves as stable stand for
cooking devices, modded weber kettles, hot
plates, slabs of granite etc. and container
for management of the secondary air. </p>

Roman";"> </span></span></span><b>Stainless
steel flue pipe</b> – forms an internal
chimney. </p>

This TLUD design has been working mostly
very well. There are issues with excessive
soot with certain combinations of reactor
diameter and chimney height and fuel. I
have certain sizes that work very well and I
am experimenting with ways to increase the
cooking heat without increasing soot. Fan
forcing the primary air seems to do the
trick and so does increasing the chimney
height.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Anyway, after using this
TULD for smoking fish and BBQs for a year I
thought it time to take it to the next level
and make an oven fired for below with a
TULD. It took me a couple of months to
build but now we have been enjoying the fun
part of making pizzas and optimising the
design. The purpose of the oven is not just
to cook pizzas and food but also to
experiment with controlled pyrolysis. I
have been trying to pyrolise pieces of
bamboo in a way that they retain their shape
so they can be used as pots for plants and
even ornaments that will help deodorise and
dehumidify in the home. So far my attempts
have been too hot and cooling off too fast
so the bamboo is distorting. After I have
more experience with the Pizza oven I am
hoping to achieve better control of the
heat. Earlier this year I participated in a
workshop with Steven Joseph and I now also
want to try to make low temperature biochar
mineral complexes and I think my oven might
be a suitable device to make it in.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">This is still very much a
work in progress and there is always more to
perfect. In the last few days I have made a
low profile trolley to easily slide the TULD
in and out from under the oven, a new fan
with speed controls and new oven door using
a perlite and refractory cement mix. If it
turns out strong enough, it will be lighter,
easier to use and shield some of the heat at
the door.</p>
