<DIV><FONT face=Arial><BR></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>> Kevin,<BR>> <BR>> The cut flower industry
uses prodigious amounts of insecticides, <BR>> fungicides,
herbicides, etc. I would imagine that the green waste from
<BR>> such an operation would not be healthy to feed to cattle or any
other <BR>> animal.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial># The insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides could
very well be the problem.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial> I don't know that it would be good to burn it
either. Any ideas <BR>> on how to deactivate (inexpensively)
these chemicals so that the waste can <BR>> be safely utilized for
compost, fodder or fuel?</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial># Such "pesticides" are often chemicals that contain
chlorine. Burning them would produce a smoke containing dioxins. Such
pesticides may block the Composting process by killing the compost
organisms.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial># What about the possibility of </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>1: Air dry the green waste to about 15% moisture
content</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>2: Gasify the dried biomass</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>3: Cool the gases to about 250 F to 300 F, to allow
re-formation of dioxins.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>4: Filter the gasifier gas output through a bed of char,
to capture any residual dioxins</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial># Output products could be as follows:</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>1: A clean and safe fuel gas</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>2: Some clean char, suitable for garden use</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>3: A Waste Stream of char, contaminated with
dioxins that could be treated further for dioxin destruction.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial>This would be a costly process, but at least it has the
potential to eliminate the Community health hazard.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
