<p>Hi Kevin, </p>
<p><font face="Calibri" size="4">1: Have you seen any change
in "stable conditions" since you started using charcoal
with the bedding? Absolutely! The first thing I
noticed was a reduction of odors. The second
observation was lack of flies.</font></p>
<p><font face="Calibri" size="4">I have a full grown horse
and a mini. (small pony) I put about a bushel of
charcoal in their stall each week. The stall has not
been clean since October so it is piling up. This gives
lots of time for the charcoal to soak up the nitrogen in
the manure. </font></p>
<p><font face="Calibri" size="4">2. No they do not eat it.</font></p>
<p><font face="Calibri" size="4">3. No I have not added it
to their feed. They do a great job of walking and
crushing it into the manure as it is. </font></p>
<p><font face="Calibri" size="4">4 Very positive response in
the soil. Horse manure is noted for lots of weeds due to
the seeds in the hay and the digestive system of the
horse that allows most of them to pass through. I am
not having that problem. Not sure what is going on, but
weeds are a lot easier to pull when the soil tilth is
enhance with charcoal. My soil has lots of clay, so
char helps here. Water infiltration is much improved.
No standing water after a big rain. The soil is more
fertile in that my use of chemical fertilizer is
practically nil and my corn is tall. </font></p>

<p>My strategy is to make biochar from pine in a
TLUD hot water stove that
heats the shop. The charcoal is then place in
the horse stall where the
horse grinds it into the manure. This spring,
the manure will be hauled
to the garden and incorporated into the soil
using a Gravely walk behind
tractor that runs on charcoal. During the
growing season, more charcoal
and mulch will be used as a side dressing to
the crops to conserve moisture,
smother weeds and add more organic matter to
the soil for next year.</p>
<p>This system was tested and has worked well
over the past three years so
this coming year, I plan to expand to a larger
field. The crops will be
potatoes and garlic since deer will not eat
them. I will also be ramping
up my charcoal production to amend this larger
garden.</p>
