I appreciate and value the perspectives that every one of you brings to the conversation about stoves. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'>Working with cooking stoves allows us the privilege of trying to improve the lives of the very least of us, the most vulnerable to large scale changes, and in some of the most difficult environments in the world. Those people need our help, and they especially need our help in times of crises. So please, keep in mind that keeping the flow of communication going as we deal with the increasing demands that we're facing, is my main motivation in writing this email. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'>The problem is that email is a very limited form of communication, and difficult conversations about the sources of changes to complex systems are better to have in person. It's easy to get confused about another person's beliefs when you're having a conversation about a complex topic through a low bandwidth method of communication like email. It's also difficult when you have a conversation topic that is so hot that everyone's emotions get involved, and participants focus on scoring individual points rather than listening to each other. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'>In the past, there have been heated debates about climate change that have just about killed the list, too many vital people left it. For that reason, and no other one, we've banned topics like global warming, climate change, and ocean acidification. Andrew was simply trying to remind list participants of that ban, which is a rule that was set by this community for its self after a particularly difficult exchange a few years ago. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D'>I would love to see our work to improve cooking stoves move forward, and I value your participation. I encourage you to have conversations about difficult topics, but I'd like you to pursue them off-list. It's also a good idea to remember to give other people the benefit of the doubt, especially when you may not understand them.
