He had had major heart surgery just six weeks ago, and had been in convalescence with complete bed rest."<br><br>He has also been serving as Convenor of WG1 of ISO TC-285, among numerous other activities. For many years he headed the Energy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town. Rather unusually, he was a physicist, a chemist and an engineer.
