Not sure I would promote this practice. Of course, it is a small amount of char that would be lost and would probably not be that important - but still <span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">the amount</span><span class="gmail_default"> collected can be substantial in fact, more than you would expect. Here on the Olympic Peninsula in my Sequim organic gardeners group, one couple asked me about making biochar in an ammunition can in their wood stove with a daily burn. I explained how and how to save it etc. etc. They never said a word about how that was going. Several months later in fact, the following spring, I asked if they had followed up and accumulated any biochar. She replied "oh yes we have a 55 gal. barrel forward and put on the garden later when we deal the garden". Just a minor correction: the documentary was made in the summer of 2018,<br>
not 2017.<br>
<br>
Also, something I had not thought of regarding exposure to emissions from<br>
TLUDs. Since the TLUD is run on batches of fuel, and don't need stoking,<br>
women can set it going, and walk away, coming back when the cooking is<br>
done. One of the women said that she went off to tend her retail business,<br>
leaving the TLUD unattended.<br>

We have been using Magpi+ to do in field surveys. It is such a step above<br>
the old paper and scan method. But unfortunately the free user level is<br>
hard to process data once collected. Paid user is $500/month so not really<br>
worth it. Seems like there are lots of free options out there but curious<br>
if anyone has a suggestion of the best. Ideally it can be used on a smart<br>
phone when outside of cellular coverage and then uploaded once back in wifi<br>
or cell zone.<br>

The Magpi+ data input method looks nice.<br>
<br>
However for statistical analysis, I find that the R programming language<br>
worth getting to know for data manipulation, multiple regression techniques<br>
and validation of relationships. The R Project for Statistical Computing<br>
is free. There is a steep learning curve to program in R: one needs to be<br>
familiar with data structures, coding, and graduate-level statistics.<br>
<br>
On a smart phone, it is nice to have good forms. The Magpi+ seems to do<br>
well there, and can help guide interviewers through the process. However,<br>
I would prefer something that doesn't send your data to the cloud, but will<br>
transferred it to a PC spreadsheet. There could be privacy issues,<br>
especially is one uses GPS coordinates as the identifier key of households<br>
in a database.<br>
<br>
What would be nice is reliable speech recognition in a cell phone that<br>
could be used to save the answers to open questions as text. Off-line<br>
English transcription is still a bit buggy on Android phones. On-line, I<br>
am really impressed. It has come a long way in the past 20 years. But<br>
what about the other 1000s of languages?<br>
