<p class="MsoNormal">That is my experience: I have seen “petrol” given as the name for “diesel oil”. In Kinshasa they say “oil” for (I think) “diesel”. Maybe that’s where the “oil” part comes from: diesel oil.

<p>I don't know about the DRC but (to my understanding) in France "pétrole" usually means petroleum (crude oil) but can also be short for "pétrole lampant" ("lamp oil") which is kerosene (specifically, the lighter grade of kerosene as used for lanterns). "Essence"
is gasoline and "gazole" (formerly "gas-oil") is diesel.<span style="mso-fareast-language:EN-CA"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
