David,
We have been working in Guatemala for the past year and a half with the Guatemalan Fundacion Progressar, in developing local training capacity, local based briquette production and local equipment supply for locally defined markets of the holey and wholly briquette or "Eco Lena" as it's being called. (Much of that story from our perspective, is covered in the news section of our website www.legacyfound.org)
Our contacts at Fundacion Progressar are;
• Dra Letecia Velasquez Zapeta director of the Fundacion<bpvguatemala en gmail.com>
and
• Gustavo Molina, director of their Environment and Eco Lena program <gustavo.molina.desarrollo en gmail.com>
Their perspective is of course far more detailed and important to your groups understanding of their experience in the real environment and we would invite you to communicate directly with them to learn of their actual experience with Eco Lena, their training and equipment supply capacity and ambitions.
We will be back in Guatemala working with the Fundacion this October but with their now established training capacity, it seems that the technology is poised to expand into the rest of meso America where it can be taken up locally as well in a similar fashion. The Fundacion has already trained about 62 more groups in Guatemala as well as three more in Oaxaca Mexico and has requests for similar work in two other nations in the region. Any viable expansion effort of course presumes that is able to find the right home ie., that it can be connected to situations and like counterpart organizations where it is clearly needed and will likely be accepted and sustained in the local markets.
I look forward to collaboration with you and CEDSOL in the future especially as we begin to acquire language facility and put kiSwahili on the back burner for the time being at least. I think I can say that the Fundacion will have similar interests in expanding its services for and learning from the group as well.
We will be moving down to Nicaragua or a few months to explore possibilities there as well. If you have any recommendations then, please, lets open up a dialogue.
Kind regards,
Richard Stanley
