Speaking of high temperature sealants, A material used in the repair of high temperature furnaces called Guiselgur, a material withstanding high temperatures beyond that of molten steel.
It is only today that I discover this material has another name Diatomaceous earth.

No. When we bolted flange surfaces together, those joints are VERY rarely pulled apart again. Something pretty major is happening for us to need to do that. So removing the old gasket and laying down new rope is perfectly acceptable to us.

I have had the same good luck. Did you ever try to use a lube on one side to make a removable gasket? Bruce

Depending on the location and application, we have had good success using Deacon products 3300 (for bolted together flange surface-to-surface seals) and 4011 (for threaded fittings). We don't really care for Deacon product 8875-Thin, but maybe we simply did not have the correct need/application for that product.

>From current discussions about gasification system sealing, I just recalled how we sealed vacuum heat treating vessels that had to be good down to about 10 ^-6 microns or better. We used Quad rings in milled (trepanned) recesses, with vacuum greases applied. These seals were resealable many dozens of times. I don’t know about temperature ranges available for them. In our case, we used them on the exterior joints of the vessels where the temps seldom exceeded the boiling point of water. But that was in the 1960’s, so I wouldn’t be surprised if materials have improved a lot since then.
A “Quad ring” is a sort-of square cross section ring, with o-shaped edges.

for a better look at one style. There are others.
