Ken and list,
  portland cement is not the best for refractory concretes. High alumina 
cements are best. One example is known as Cement Fondue, available in 
the UK from South Western Industrial Plasters. Sculptors like it as you 
can get a quick set. ( it got a bad name some while back as builders 
used it to take short cuts with structural elements)
  I have a very good set of info from Lefarge on using this and other 
high alumina cements. Get in touch if you are interested.
