The recent discussion on small scale gasifiers refers. What about gasifiers that are directly hooked up to either boiler or furnace? Ron has shown that one of his systems has been operating for decades, admittedly on much bigger scale. There are smaller units available that gasify and raise steam. 

As an alternative to electricity generation, there is also the ability to drive mechanical devices such as pumps and mills using belt drives. The control of these machines is much simpler as they do not have maintain an exact frequency. This allows a certain amount of up and down variability on speed making really "simple" gasifiers useful in these applications.
