Could be. Agua Das drove a gasifier powered school bus in the early 1980s.

I don't know Tom.... Is this a gasifier fueled bus?

Greg,

Gasifiers don’t produce much char but biochar can be an important co-product of gasification. Your gasifier probably produces about 2% of a very good quality char with a very high surface area. If you are running your gasifier for any reasonable period you will accumulate enough char to use or sell. A less efficient updraft or downdraft gasifier can be made to produce 10-15% char or even up to 25% char. The quality changes at lower peak gasifier temperatures but there are still markets for the char. Good quality char from updraft sawdust gasifiers, that are used for generating heat to dry wood, is bagged and shipped by the truckload all across North America. It is sold as biochar or in soil amendments that are used in gardens, greenhouses, golf courses, and in stormwater and remediation. It is sold wholesale, in garden centers, and online by many small producers, independent soil blenders, and large discount (“box”) stores. Cannabis growers have been good customers. It adds up to tens of thousands of cubic yards per year to repeat customers. This is no longer just a backyard DIY activity. There are companies using gasifiers whose 10%-15% biochar product makes up 40% of their revenue. Heat or power make up the rest. Revenues from biochar can displace government subsidies and make your gasifier truly economic.

Gasifier char can be very good quality for many uses. The above mentioned chars are regularly tested as having little odor, low tars, low ash and high surface area. There are also chars that are stinky, tarry, high ash and have low agronomic value depending on the use. The latter don’t get repeat customers. Or they are upgraded through post processing by either burning out the tars thermally or biologically. Biological conditioning can also lower pH and inoculate the char. Combining or composting gasifier char with manure, litter, or vermicompost improves the quality and handling of these materials. Biochar is also being used as a carrier for effective microorganisms, bio-fertilizers bio-pesticides, and nutrient sources. There are commercial products that do all of these with gasifier chars.

We have been told for several years that “biochar” can only be made through pyrolysis (not gasification or combustion) at temperatures of 400⁰C-600⁰C. Plants tell us that they are perfectly happy with gasifier (600⁰C-800⁰C) and even high carbon combustion (800⁰C-1000⁰C)chars. High carbon flyash is also low yield (2%) but there is still a lot of it from older boilers that burn wet sawdust. What is “better” is often what someone can afford. Pyrolysis chars are great if you can afford the equipment. You also get wood vinegars that are used in other countries. The heavy tars are the biggest challenge. They are best burned or fed to an anaerobic digester where they can boost methane gas production.

So “get on the bus” and bring your gasifier to Biochar 2016! We’ll show you how to grow great food with gasifier char.

I think the issue here is that for some unknown reason, the people involved in biochar, somehow think that gasifiers produce lots of char ( like incinerators ) they are trying to "side" with people like us for 1) reputation ? 2) a waste stream from us (small but there) 3) A complete lack of understanding on their part as to what gasifiers really do ( most probably ).

Experience the Synergy

Over the last several years, researchers have helped open up many promising avenues for biochar market development in North America. Likewise, many entrepreneurs and small business owners have made investments to develop commercial markets.

With so much research being published on biochar (over 5000 publications in 2015 alone!), there is a need to bring together these two groups to share information, lessons learned, and to solicit ideas on the pathway forward for biochar commercial development. The US Biochar Initiative and Sustainable Obtainable Solutions aims to bring together stakeholders in the applied biochar research community and the private sector to further biochar market development.
