What's happening at the conference?

Pre-conference workshops provide an opportunity to exchange experiences growing food with biochar. Key note speakers will lead off with needs for soil health and climate change followed by table top discussion of important topics. Ninety presentations and forty posters will cover topics such as product quality, markets, education, policy, harvesting and processing, post processing, and applications in forestry, agriculture, storm water and remediation. Experiences ranging from small scale to full scale industrial and agricultural systems will be described. We will map strategies for developing North American biochar markets and use. A tour will demonstrate commercial applications and field research by our host Oregon State University. So much to do! Jennifer Moore Kucera will discuss the relationship of biochar and soil. She recently joined the NRCS Soil Health Division as the West Regional Soil Health Team Leader. Before joining NRCS, Kucera was an associate professor of soil and environmental microbiology with the Department of Plant and Soil Science at Texas Tech University. At TTU, she taught undergraduate and graduate-level courses in soil science and did  research to better understand management options for positively influencing our soil’s living organisms. Kucera has been involved in soil health-related research, extension, and teaching in varied agronomic, horticultural, forest, and range systems across the western and central U.S. since the 90s. She holds a bachelor's degree in biology and environmental studies from Binghamton University; a master’s degree in soil science from Iowa State University; and a Ph.D. in soil science from Oregon State University.

  Jim Amonette's keynote address will focus on carbon drawdown potential of biochar in Washington State. He has 37 years of research experience in the areas of environmental geochemistry and soil mineralogy.  He received his B.S. in Soil Science from New Mexico State University, and his M.S. and Ph.D in Soil Chemistry from Iowa State University. Dr. Amonette joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 1986 and is a member of the Geochemistry Group in the Physical Sciences Division housed in the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory.  His primary scientific interest is to find ways of sustainably harnessing the large carbon flux passing through the terrestrial ecosystem to help mitigate global climate change.
