[Gasification] Straw Fueled CHP

Not surprising the comments below. The list of gasifier failures continues to grow without realizing the promises it portends.
We have gasified slagging materials and have had to operate between the gasification and slagging temperatures using careful control of the temperature and moderating materials to achieve this. We have managed to successfully address the gas cooling and cleaning with simple, non-barrier, non-filtering, non-fouling designs. Really work well at a very low cost and minimal maintenance with no replacement materials or clogging, mostly at low temperature.
Thermogenics continues to pursue the field in spite of the large number of others who have crashed and burned, so to speak, but because of the number of derelicts along the road, financing has been extremely difficult.
It is doubtful that what is being sought, a commercially successful straw or general ag waste gasifier will be found, if it did exist in the commercial realm, they would be so widespread that it would be an easy search, like so many others who have been searching without success.

I spend 3 years at the technical university in Denmark to build a 50-100 kg straw pyrolysis unit. I could not find any documents in English but here is a Danish reference about the demo plant that came out of it. - http://www.videncenter.dk/gule%20halm%20haefte/Gul_Dansk/halm-DK09.pdf
I was far too complicated to be commercial.

We tried to gasify straw with very little success in various smaller gasifier. Slagging and channelling and high carbon content in the ash was some challenges.

Some years ago a project was upscaled to 6 MW - but there was some thing wrong with the ash discharge principle. The K stayed in the bed and it was not possible to operate the gasifier long enough to complete this project and approx. half the funding was returned and the project stopped with out any results. https://energiforskning.dk/sites/energiteknologi.dk/files/slutrapporter/10730_gasolution_final_report.pdf

And in the same period charloss was renamed to BioCCS.

We did not find any easy solutions - but we only spend a few hundreds mio dollars :-)

Energy Farmers of Australia has very little specific information on their "projects" which is disappointing. By producing bio=char, you have a built in limit of energy conversion because bio-char or pyrolytic char represents the 30% fixed carbon in organic matter and is the overall thermal conversion is intrinsically limited by this loss. I am still of the opinion that long term "recycling" of crop residue which is what bio-char is has limited benefits from other nutrient depletion.

Hi Daryl,

try this crowd http://www.energyfarmers.com.au

I was connected to Euan Beamont at energy farmers back in 2013, and exchanged a few emails with him. I directed him to this list, so he may be party to the conversation anyway. A mutual friend was Business Development Officer for the Council out there and was trying help progress for both Euan and myself.

Euan told me he knew these guys. https://www.facebook.com/Green-Distillation-Technologies-427038147363145/

Thanks Tom,
I've received a few good leads and hopefully one of them will prove suitable. Liz Hamilton suggested I use your site and it was well worth while.

We field burn million of tonnes of cereal straw annually in Australia and it just makes sense to use it for energy instead.

Regards,
Daryl.

Ag Energy in Spokane, Washington has been developing a straw gasifier. You will have to contact to them to discover their experience with engines and power generation.

Hello,

I'm looking for a supplier of proven gasification CHP systems that can use wheat straw as fuel, either shredded or as pellets. The outputs needed are 150 kWe net and 350 kWt.

I would like references from operating plants, preferably in Australia, Europe or North America, to confirm the reliability of their systems.

Any suggestion will be gratefully received.

Yours sincerely,

Daryl Scherger.
