Gordon: Your "Aussie colleague Nick Pyner" never considers Diversity factor: The probability that a particular piece of equipment will come on at the same time.     Taking this into account makes efficient tankless water heaters a better choice for both gas & electric distribution systems.  This is the reason electric utilities have spent millions lobbying DOE to make sure no Energy Star labels are given for tankless-electric water heaters --- which can be used to heat a house cheaper & cleaner than oil using systems like that illustrated in Fig. 2 of RMI's Home Energy Brief #5  Water Heating @ http://scvss.com/Documents/E04-15_HEB5_Water%20Heating.pdf.
