[Greenbuilding] Pergolas east/west or north/south

Does anyone have a architectural url reference for pergolas and their
design and princples? Its the only shade structure that can deal with the
wind in my area.
I would like to be able to predict the amount of sun penetrating relative
to size, height  orientation etc.  Yes, I have looked into Ramadas also.
