[Greenbuilding] Roofers

Like anything you get what you ask for so the question needs to be well
defined for any of the possible contractors, i.e. you need a plan and spec
on paper with assembly details and material specifications. If there is
anyone that has hung out their shingle as an 'envelope designer' that might
be a choice or any designer should be able to do something and recommend
contractor(s). It may be a builder/roofer/envelope company but the basic
things is - if they understand the plan without too many odd questions then
you have some level of assurance they understand and will build whats on the
plan.

I never let a roofer near a roof without a solid set of drawn details - its
an important and costly object and there is no longer such a thing as a
plain old roof.

Commercial roofers work with insulation all the time, flat roof sloped roof,
all kinds of roofing membranes including asphalt if you're going that route.
What you want is not uncommon practice around here, a long way from NY
unfortunately. Roofers don't frame up and sheath roofs, so carpenters have
harnesses and all that jazz too.

Thanks Jason,

I'm hoping to insulate both between the rafters as well as on top of the
sheathing. I can see an "insulation co." doing between the rafters from the
attic but not sure about an insulation co getting ON the roof laying foam
sheets on the exterior....it seems too intertwined with what a roofer
does...harnesses, etc....please correct me if I am wrong because my search
has turned up no one.

I have the "plans" from Building Science Corps "Guide for Builders". Many
great illustrations in that document that lay out the exact details of every
part/junction/penetration, etc.

I have one lead from Genero but schedules are tricky. Would still appreciate
any additional thoughts on my plans or leads for roofers in the NY area.

Thanks
Bill

Your region doesn't have a monopoly on the problem. You're probably best off
having a roofer do the roof and a good insulation guy or GC/energy retrofit
contractor insulate. Depending on the nature of the job, it may benefit to
draw up some plans specific to the house for all contractors to work from
and (gasp) collaborate.
