[Greenbuilding] thermal implications of a vault vs flat ceiling at R-38?

I think with the kind of spaces we used to build/live in/grew up in that
had minimal or no insulation (compared to what we today sometimes install)
this was undoubtedly true. Warm air rises and with tall ceilings, churches,
etc. the heat wasn't ending up where the people were sitting/kneeling/etc.
But with R40 +/- and thermal breaks in the wall design I've found the
stratification question as well as the thermal fluctuations to be
dramatically reduced. And I suspect our physicist friends could help us
understand why this would be. Reduced infiltration/air exchanges/drafts =
less air movement which combined with better retention of the heat that is
in the space = a more uniform distribution of comfortable conditions across
both time and space.

At least that is my working theory.
