The secret behind large scale phasing out of fossil fuels is district
heating. District heating is more or less standard in Swedish towns and
cities and since the end of the 1980ies ther has been a strong trend to burn
biomass. The most commonsly used kainds ofbiomass are woodchips and resdues
frommlogging like branches andtreetops. Another important fuel is industrial
and municipal waste. Some also use biogas from old landfills, sewage
cleaningplants and from digestion plants. However the biogas i allways a
small part of the fuel used for the simple reason that there is not enough
of rawmaterial that is more suitable for digestion than for direct burning.
Kristanstad is in middle of a large farming district where there is also
much animal husbandry an quite a few food industries that has waste that is
more suitable for digestion. So the situation is favourable for using
relatively more biogas than in many other places.

C4 is the energy company working in Kristianstad. Attached is a diagram
showing how the fuel mix has changes over the years. This development is not
unique for Kristianstad. We have seen the same in many towns.

Kristianstad and the surrounding county essentially no longer use oil, gas
or coal to heat homes and businesses.
