There is a report extant on the internet about research done by Anne
Wilkie and her group which discusses the use of natural materials as a
platform for microbial growth in AD. (Do forgive me for not providing
a better title and a link, but lack of time does not allow.)
As well, with regard to manufactured materials, looking at places that
supply equipment for large aquariums will provide a lot of choices.
Here in the US, one might use Aquatic Eco-systems, for example
(AquaticEco.com).
