[Digestion] WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) and Zero Waste Scotland to fund multiple feasibility studies for technologies which show potential to convert Biowastes into Novel Products

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is now a key technology for recycling biowastes in
the UK, it produces large volumes of effluent ('digestate') that are applied
to agricultural land. However digestate is a loss centre for AD businesses,
so WRAP and Zero Waste Scotland are investigating the potential for novel
technologies to add value to the whole digestion process, with an emphasis
on the digestate. Aqua Enviro are undertaking this investigation on their
behalves and have set up (in conjunction with iVeridis) a facility for
interested parties to upload details of relevant technologies/research.

The outputs from this investigation will inform future funding plans by both
WRAP and Zero Waste Scotland for potential investment in the UK organic
waste sector. Specifically WRAP and Zero Waste Scotland will fund multiple
feasibility studies of those technologies which show potential. This step
will act as a precursor to a larger technology hub which shall act as a
funding and development point for bringing new technologies to market
through full scale demonstration. The hub is expected to draw on a
partnership approach with bodies including NERC, BBSRC, EPSRC and TSB.
International funding and knowledge partners will also be invited.
