[Digestion] Project in Haiti

Dear Luckner,
if cattle dung is dried and burned, you release about 4000 kcal/kg
energy. The same quantity of dung, if subjected to anaerobic
digestion, would yield only about 200 kcal energy in the form of
methane. Please note that dung is not a good substrate for producing
methane. I tell you why. The anaerobic organisms produce carbon
dioxide, which means that even if there is no molecular oxygen in
their environment, they are taking their oxygen from some source. This
source is the material on which they feed. The consortium of biogas
producing organisms convert nitrate into ammonia, sulphate into
hydrogen sulphide and carbohydrades into a hydrocarbon called methane,
and they utilize the oxygen released in this process for their own
metabolism. Since dung is already the end product of an anaerobic
process, there is hardly any oxygen left in it for the biogas
micro-organisms to use. On the other hand, when you burn dung, the
reduced compounds in the dung get oxidised, using atmospheric oxxygen
to release a lot of energy. So please don't cheat your clients by
giving them an outdated and unscientific technology. Make biogas from
green leaves and not from dung.
